If you´ve found yourself in Lyon, Valence, or Marseille for a couple of days, dare yourself to ascend up the heights and ski those near awe-striking views down gracefully. The Rhone Alps offers around 160 ski resorts and 16 linked areas. The largest and most famous one is between Courchvele, Meribel, Les Menuires, Val Thorens, and Paradiski. This area lies just a few hours away from our favorite cities, and is known to have hosted the winter Olympics many times.

Chamonix

Chamonix, for example, lies around 2 hours away from Lyon, and is known to be one of the best ski slopes in France. Chamonix is best known for hosting the Winter Olympics in 1924, yet it was definitely a place to be way before that. Chamonix is at the end of Alpine since 1760.  It´s also called the capital of all mountain skiing. From beginner to experienced to professional and all levels of skiers, the area offers all kinds of mountains to enjoy a glide on.

Full of beautiful glaciers with steep, leveled slopes, the sights themselves are enough to enjoy an effortless holiday. Instructors are found everywhere to teach and guide those that don’t have a lot of experience, and those that do can enjoy the steepest of slopes. There, lies the 20km Vallee Blanche glacier run, where buses and queues line to climb through lifts and you don’t need to be a professional to enjoy. The resort stands 1035m in height, top lift is 3,842m and its slope is known to be a top quality slope. And while you’re there make sure to have some of what is said to be “The world’s best hot chocolate” at Le Lapin Agile, it is said to be so syrupy, thick and sweet and so delicious it will blow your senses away.

Courchevel

Courchevel is around 2 and a half hours away from Valence, and is also a very famous ski resort in France. There are many activities to do in this resort however, so if you plan on going you may want to stay a bit longer than a day or two if you want to get everything done.

Courchevel mountain views

During the day you can enjoy the views from the skies in hot air balloons, or stay on the low and drive cars on ice and snow. The mountain views will take your breath away but you can go on a helicopter ride just be ware and don’t dare get a heart attack. The skis are full and the snow is endless, so the lines to ski and snowboard are no doubt plentiful.  But you can also go dogsledding or do a torchlight ski descent. Should the snow not be enough and the countless activities lack your trust, head to the ice rink and slide once or twice and of course don’t forget to enjoy some hot chocolate at ¨Le Chalet de Pierres¨ and enjoy the breath-taking scenery and delicious dessert menu.

Megeve

Another very famous resort is Megeve, this one is around 2 hours away from Lyon as well. This resort is not only known to be famous, but it is know to be glamorous due to the fact that it’s a celebrity attraction. From top American artists like Tom Cruise to great Parisian stars, Megeve´s Fermes du Grand Champ has attracted many. Over there are many luxurious activities and hotels, and its more pricey than a lot of other resorts in the area. But if you’re looking to do some celebrity sight seeing and do some skiing with the crème-de-la-crème than this is the right place for you.

Megeve's ski resort

The village’s charm and beautiful top views are a sight to behold, and the ski slopes are fantastic. But the skiing is divided into three sectors. The first is through lifts from the edge of town, the second is from the suburbs from out of town, and the third involves a bus or a horse sleigh. And of course don’t forget the most important thing. Pass by ¨Laduree Megeve¨ where it’s said to be hot chocolate heaven. Enjoy the lovely view, people watch under a fur rug, and have some mouthwatering macaroons.

Finally, whether you choose to go to Chamonix, Courchevel, or Megeve, just enjoy a good getaway from all the hard work and take some time away through Renfe-SNCF en Coopération.
