If you thought you'd seen it all in terms of museums, you might need to visit Abode of Chaos, a museum of contemporary art located a stone's throw from Lyon. It's true that contemporary art can be incomprehensible to the untrained, but Demeure du Chaos is quite different from what any traveller might be accustomed to. Its charm, however, lies in the chaos and eccentricity that emanates from it. Our Renfe-SNCF in Cooperation trains will take you to Lyon at full speed so you can get to know this and other museums in the city.

A visit to the “Abode of Chaos"

The name of this museum of contemporary art was not chosen by chance. Moreover, the feeling of chaos is the first thing that comes to mind when setting foot in this place. Demeure du Chaos, which translated would be something like “Abode of Chaos", is an open-air museum created in 1999 by the entrepreneur Thierry Ehrmann.

With a surface area of 9,000 m2, the museum contains more than 5,400 pieces ranging from various artistic disciplines: painting, sculpture, engravings, etc. The works are connected to each other through a series of murals, objects that seem to be abandoned and destroyed, bunkers, skulls and the remains of rusty machinery, airplanes or helicopters. The spontaneous arrangement of the objects in this eccentric museum of contemporary art makes the visitor feel more like in a war zone.

The Demeure du Chaos museum also contains more than 1,200 portraits of outstanding figures. During the visit, it is advisable to open your eyes wide to identify the faces of characters such as Donald Trump, Osama Bin Laden, George W. Bush or Fidel Castro.

Around 120,000 people visit this unusual contemporary art museum every year. This implies that more than 1 million visitors have come since its opening. More and more people are curious about this 17th-century house, which has been refurbished to become a museum thanks to the efforts of more than 70 artists.
