What is the Lumière Festival?
The Lumière Festival is the greatest movie event in Lyon, and takes place every year in October. This event was born in 2009, which means that in 2018 it will celebrate its long-awaited 10th edition.
More specifically, it will take place from Saturday 13 to Sunday 21 of October – more than a week of movie sessions, tributes, talks and a myriad of activities related to the world of the seventh art.
The many Trompe-l'œils that reference the Lumière brothers are proof that, in Lyon, film is experienced with intensity.
As you may have guessed, this festival was born as a homage to the Lumière brothers, who, in case you didn’t know, grew up in Lyon. This is the reason why their name was chosen to represent a unique event before the world, where each year actors, directors, critics and historians come together to share their passion for cinema together.
In the last edition, over 170,000 people attended the festival and had the chance to watch the 174 films that were screened.
What awaits you in this next 2018 edition
2018 is a year of celebration, since the 10th edition of the festival is being held. This is the reason why the organizers have prepared a juicy program, with the goal of attaining higher attendance numbers than during previous editions.
This time around, the traditional Lumière award that is given at the end of each session will go to Jane Fonda, an actress and producer with a great background. The artist will therefore be the tenth person to receive this award, after industry professionals such as Pedro Almodóvar, Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese and Clint Eastwood.
In addition to the screening of over a hundred films, the Lumière Festival will include talks and retrospectives dedicated to great people in film history. The 10th edition will pay homage to legends of the seventh art such as Henri Decoin and Richard Thorpe. Many celebrities of the world of movies will also be there as guests, such as actress Liv Ullmann, critic Peter Bogdanovich and singer Bernard Lavilliers.
Icons of the film industry, such as directors Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuarón, were among the guests of the previous edition.
One of the greatest attractions of this festival is that it is an event that is held at several locations in Lyon, which means that the passion for the seventh art will spread throughout the entire city.
