Each summer since the year 1946, Lyon oozes culture thanks to Les Nuits de Fourvière, an event that brings interesting proposals to this French city in the fields of cinema, dance, theatre, circus, opera and others.
In 2018, the schedule begins on June 1st and last until July 28th. This means two intense months filled with activities for all audiences, to take place at the mythical Fourvière hill – the place where Romans decided the foundation of the city.
If you have no plans for this summer, our advice to you is that you climb aboard one of our Renfe-SNCF in Cooperation high-speed trains and witness this festival – one of the most popular summer events in France. You’ll love it!
This year, Les Nuits de Fourviére holds its 73rd edition with a broad program that includes 60 shows and captures the attention of over 30,000 people on each installment, both French and foreigners. The stage where most of the activities are to take place could not be more magical: the Roman theatres of Fourvière. This complex, built between the 17th and the 15th century B.C., regains its original splendor each summer and is filled with performances that encompass all artistic disciplines.

In the realm of theatre, the festival will offer drama and marionette plays, and even magic shows to delight the audience. The plays include ‘Les Naufragés’, ‘Frankenstein’, ‘L’ami commun’ and ‘Le paradoxe de Georges’. All of them will keep the audience at the edge of their seats until the conclusion of each play is revealed.
In regard to circus, the Cirque Aïtal company will introduce those present to a beautiful love story between two acrobats. Another main attraction will arrive directly from Ukraine; more specifically, at the hand of Terabak de Kyiv, who will offer a cabaret show chock-full of bravura.
In the field of dance, the genres will be many and varied. Folia will blend the hip-hop of Mourad Merzouki with the baroque music of Le Concert de l’Hostel Dieu, while Carlos Costa, a renowned Cuban dancer, will conquer the audience with Acosta Danza. Flamenco will also have its place, at the hand of bailaores María Pagés and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui.
The music program will also be quite diverse, with jazz, pop, rock, rap, electro and world music artists. Some of the names already scheduled to appear are Texas, Juliette Armanet, Miguel Poveda, Marquis de Sade, Ben Howard, Arctic Monkeys and Massive Attack.
A summer to experience Lyon
The charm of the Fourvière streets
Attending Les Nuits de Fourvière is a great excuse to visit Lyon and discover its charms. It is well worth it to stroll around Vieux Lyon, get lost in the famous traboules (passageways) and marvel at awe-inspiring monuments such as the St. Jean Cathedral. But that is not all, because the Croix-Rousse neighbourhood is also a must-see. It is dubbed “the hill that works,” and is opposite Fourvière, which is called “the hill that prays.”
With our Renfe-SNCF in Cooperation high-speed trains, you will be able to get to Lyon from Barcelona, Figueres or Girona. An unforgettable summer awaits!
