TRYING TO CHOOSE BETWEEN LES CALANQUES AND COSTA BRAVA? WHY NOT BOTH?

If you are a lover of steep coasts, high cliffs and beaches hidden among rocks that no one else knows about, you cannot miss the Mediterranean and its "calanques" in France and "calas" in Spain. Prepare your hiking boots and travel with Renfe-SNCF in Cooperation to Les Calanques or the Costa Brava very quickly and economically. You no longer have to choose, visit both the calanques and the coves and tell us what your favorite coast is.

Les Calanques, or the Wild Side of Côte d’Azur

Les Calanques is one of the largest national parks in France and undoubtedly the most exceptional. It is the only national park that has a maritime part, a terrestrial part and a peri-urban part. For this reason, this is usually the place chosen by lovers of wildlife, flora, sea and rocks to spend an unforgettable vacation. We call Calanques to the strip of coast between Marseille, Cassis and La Ciotat. This area is protected because it represents an incomparable natural heritage with 140 species of terrestrial animals and plants and 60 different marine species.

If you want to get into the charms of Les Calanques, you must first arrive in Marseille. Luckily, Renfe-SNCF en Coopération takes you there comfortably and economically, in about four and a half hours from Barcelona. This part of the trip is the easy one. Now you must holster the hiking boots and prepare very well for an experience you will not forget. Here you can walk along trails that are hundreds of meters above the sea. You will also be lucky enough to discover little corners of sand that nobody else knows, where you can enjoy the Mediterranean without the bustle of tourists.

Of course, remember that you must prepare properly before embarking on this journey through Les Calanques. As it is a natural park, there are no services like those found on other beaches. There are no showers, fountains, or bars. Therefore, you must prepare enough water and food for an entire day, comfortable not slippery shoes, towels and other personal items and protection against the sun, rain, cold and heat. You should also know that within the national park it is prohibited to travel by car, so the routes are done on foot or by boat. Of course, the most important thing is to maintain the impressive nature as we find it so that those who come behind us can marvel at it too.

Unrepeatable landscapes and fishermen's villages await you in

Cala Boadella Beach, Costa Brava

We call Costa Brava to the coastal strip that goes from the border between France and Spain to the south until the municipality of Blanes, during a total of 214 km. "Brava" means rough in Spanish, and it is not surprising that this area is named this way. The inventor of the name was the journalist Ferràn Agulló who in 1908 described in this way the area with many cliffs, rocks and scrambled sea. One of the advantages of the Costa Brava is that it did not become a tourist destination until the 1950s and 60s. Until then it remained as a group of fishermen’s villages and farmers, without the bustle of tourists who did fill other beaches.

Because of this, and also because of its difficult orography, the Costa Brava remains a paradise on earth for lovers of nature and sea in its purest state. Across the coastal strip small villages with more touristy beaches and many services alternate with coves hidden between walls of rock that few know and many less dare to visit. The thing is "rough" no doubt, and you have to make an effort to reach some of these beach-made treasures. In most cases, we must walk several kilometers. The most difficult stages, and also more spectacular, can only be reached by sea.

The friendly locals and the delicious traditional dishes they prepare will steal your heart. In addition, with Renfe-SNCF en Coopération trains you can reach Barcelona in less than an hour and complete your vacation on Costa Brava with a visit to the impressive "condal city ".
