Come to Cannes
Views of the city of Cannes
Situated in the French Riviera, Cannes is always a glamorous city, but it becomes even more exciting during the Cannes Film Festival.
Once you are there, you should visit the Palais des Festivals et Congrès (Palace of Festivals and Conferences), located in the eastern part of the port. It is also the place where the Cannes Film Festival is celebrated.
The road that leads to this place is known as the Avenue of the Stars (Chemin des Etoiles), where you can see more than a hundred of handprints of celebrities of the seventh art. The Boulevard de la Croisette is also a very prominent road, where you can find many elegant hotels and restaurants along the sea.
History of the Festival
The Cannes Film Festival was initiated in 1946. Until then, Cannes was a quiet seaside resort known for its privileged climate. The Cannes Film Festival was created with the aim of boosting France's image in the world, as well as to promote its film industry. During the first editions, the festival was held in the Casino Municipal, moving then to the Palais des Festivals that is the location where the Film Festival takes place until nowadays.
Film directors like Orson Welles, Federico Fellini, Luis Buñuel, Francis Ford Coppola and Alfred Hitchcock walked along the mythical red carpet of Cannes.

Although the festival is reserved to industry professionals, there are also some activities for the general public. On the same day than the opening film is presented in Cannes, it will also be screened in French cinemas, so that the audience can experience the exciting moment of the opening ceremony.
The cinephiles have also an appointment with the Cinéma de la Plage, an open-air cinema in Cannes. It is the place where a film is showed every night following an established program.
This edition will be held between the 8th and 19th of May and the jury will be presided by the Australian actress Cate Blanchett.
